 Re-defining liberatory environmentalism.

Africa ReAdapt is a pan-African think and do tank committed to liberatory environmentalism. We act as a bridge between policy and investment decision making, climate and environmental science, and community-based knowledge systems. We define liberators environmentalism across 4 principles.

Principle 1: Climate as a Catalyst for Sovereignty

Harness the global focus on climate to reclaim African agency over energy, land, and resource governance. Use adaptation and mitigation strategies to strengthen self-determination and challenge externally imposed development agendas.

Principle 3: Knowledge Liberation

Center African and indigenous knowledge systems as the foundation for climate solutions. Challenge the dominance of Western scientific paradigms by demonstrating that locally rooted approaches can deliver effective, context-specific, and innovative solutions.

Principle 2: Justice-Driven Redistribution

Leverage climate finance, investment, and policy mechanisms to redress historical inequalities. Liberatory environmentalism channels resources toward communities historically excluded or exploited, turning the climate agenda into a tool for reparative justice.
Principle 4: Plural and Participatory Futures

Use the climate moment to expand who has a voice in shaping environmental futures. Liberators’ environmentalism demands inclusive decision-making, prioritizing youth, women, and marginalized communities to co-create resilient, equitable, and culturally grounded pathways.

"There's no way I can look at the climate crisis and not look at questions around racism and colonialism. A look at the historical emissions takes us back, not only to the industrial revolution, but also to histories of colonisation." - Ruth Nyambura (Kenya) – Ecofeminist and political ecologist
